Speaking for SQLUG-ID

I will speak for SQL Server User Group Indonesia monthly meeting on April 30, 2007. Yes, I will be in Jakarta at that time. Meet with many old friends, community enthusiast, most of them are SQL Server and .Net addict :) .

I’m preparing 2 hours presentation about SQL Server Security. This is a big topic, so I limit the scope just for development area. The title should be SQL Server Security: A Developer Perspective. It contains some demos about common developer mistakes when dealing with SQL Server. It’s about something beyond the firewall, yes. When your firewall offers NO protection ;) .

I’m proud with the growth of SQLUG-ID. Since I established this group about 2 years ago, It shows tremendous growth. New member come every week, and new posting appear everyday. We have consistent monthly meeting that attended by 20-30 members on average. We even made one MVP (yes Kiki!) that has the root from this group. I hope there will be more new MVP awarded to the active member of this group.

See you at BEJ Building 18th floor, Microsoft Office.

Free tutorial: Security and Membership in ASP.NET 2.0

I wrote the 3rd tutorial in ASP.NET 2.0, this is the continuation of the first tutorial in data access, and the second in master pages, themes, and multiview. This new hands on lab is about managing user data with membership provider. ASP.NET 2.0 provides a good and extensible membership framework for managing any membersip tasks. Most of the membership tasks are:

  • Handling user login and authentication
  • Securing particular page or area in the website.
  • Handing user registration and notification.
  • Password management (retrieving, reset, and validation).
  • Assign user to particular roles, moving user from role to another.
  • Creating new user and roles
  • And another so much functions…

Writing a Blog Post from Office 2007

There is a new feature in MS word 2007 that enable us to write a blog post. I guest it’s the implementation of XML-RPC standard, a common protocol for exchanging data between blog engines. I’m blogging from Word 2007 now, It’s more convenient for me to do blog post from here. Get the full advantage of rich editing capability of MS Office. Don’t mention about the licence cost, because I have a buck of MSDN license J.

When we creating a new document in Word 2007, there will be an option for blog post. It’s currently support the most common use blogging engine: blogger, wordpress, typepad, MSN space, and sharepoint. Of course, If you prefer the freeware solution for blogging client, w.bloggar is the best blogging tool as my experience.

Passed: exam 74-137

Today, I sat exam 74-137: Office 2003 XML Solution. Come on, it’s 2007 now! But I had to sit this exam. This is a partner competency exam which is compulsary for every Microsoft Partner to meet some pre requisites. If you work for MS partner company, you know what I mean. Yes, I hate it actually. Any 2003 technologies are over, replaced with 2007 flavour.

The exam itself is not too difficult. It is not counted toward MCP certification. This is partner competency pre requisite. Comparing with any other MCP exams, this is easier. It’s not asked detail coding or examining detail case study. Most of the questions are about technology assessment. Which tool you shoud choose for fixing particular problem, that’s it. These are some clues for anybody who want to take this exam:

Google Apps: Mematikan pebisnis hosting?

Minggu lalu, Google meluncurkan Google Apps.

Berikut beberapa analisisnya:

Nice Discussion on SQL Server Migration

Migration and upgrading are often overlooked by many developers and DBA. They never take care about it until they face the real problem in upgrade and migration. I recalled this matter when I was doing interesting discussion with several senior engineer at Freeport Indonesia on last April 5th, 2007. It was Dondy who called me and asked for an appointment, if I have a time to do technical presentation about this topics for his colleagues. Dondy is working for Freeport now, as he need, as a Software Archictect. Blah :P .

Actually I was on vacation at that time, but I agreed to do that. I’m willing to share anything I know to anybody who keen to learn. As usual, I opened my library and did some reviews before I went to Freeport office. Upgrade and migration is not a daily job, so that’s why every DBA is definitely miss many things about it.

To summarrize the discussion with Mera and Emal who’re responsible for big database at Freeport, these are the things that we need to take attention on migration:
